A much-loved Chai staple in India, Parle-G is something most Indians have grown up eating. Source

Parle- G is not just a biscuit its an emotion for most of us and in case you are from some other planet and haven’t tasted it yet, dude give it a try. If asked from me Parle is what it is today because of its signature product Parle-G.

Parle-G, a name that instantly brings back childhood memories of dunking crisp biscuits in a hot cup of milk and quickly having the soggy piece before it crumbled back into the milk.

Okay, I personally love eating Parle-G with water and I am sure many of us do the same, at least my cousins are with me LMAO. Rectangular in shape, awesome in taste my love for Parle-G is the same. Even today, many people across the country can not imagine their mornings without a cup of tea and a pack of Parle-G.

Little wonder that for millions of Indians, it isn’t just any other biscuit: it’s comfort food! Source

Parle-G was the first biscuit to be made in India and made for ordinary Indians. Mr. Mohanlal Dayal founded the House of Parle in 1928 and Parle’s first factory was set up between the sleepy villages of Irla and Parla, with just 12 people, serving in multiple capacities — as engineers, managers, and confectionery makers.

Before Parle was introduced, the Indian market was firmly controlled by British companies involved in making different sweets. Biscuits were luxury at the time and was only consumed by the elite classes. Additionally, People of that era were crazy about candies. Mr. Mohanlal was not very happy with the situation and went to Germany to learn the art of confectionery-making and returned back with all the skills and a machine (for approximately 60,000 rupees) required to make candies.

This is how parle become the first Indian company to manufacture cheap and good quality products all over. Most of you might be familiar with that sweet little orange-flavored candy, yes the one you are imagining right now. As a kid, I used to buy them in pairs for just rupee 1.

Now coming to our spoiler about the famous Parle-G girl-

For decades it was assumed that it was a photograph click by Neeru Deshpande’s father when she was four and a half year old and as they have good links with the founders of Parle company they managed to put that photograph on every packet of Parle-G but, it is not true as Mayank Shah, product manager of Parle, beyond all of these rumors said that this is not a picture of any real person but just an illustration. In the ’60s, an artist named Maganlal Dahiya made it.

Not true, Shocked!!! We are too, so decided to share this story with you.

It was only 10 years later that Parle began its biscuit making operations. Biscuits were first baked in the year 1938-1939. These made in India biscuits quickly became popular with the public. However, in 1947, a severe shortage of wheat immediately after Independence meant that the production of Parle Gluco biscuits had to stop for a while but, soon recover as well. Since then Parle-G is one of the most liked biscuits of India.

FAQs- Legacy of Parle-G

1. Why Parle changed its signature biscuits name from Parle Gluco to Parle-G?

In 1982, Parle Gluco was changed to Parle-G as the company does not have a patent on the word “Gluco”. The competition increased as other brands also started using the term gluco in their packaging as gluco was considered as a short form for glucose and Due to this, the sale of the parle was heavily influenced.

2. Is Parle-G the world’s most selling biscuit?

Parle Products claims to make the world’s biggest-selling biscuit by volume. In fact, it is so popular, “Most people know the company as Parle-G now – it’s that big a brand now”, says the company’s executive director Ajay Chauhan.

3. How many Parle-G is produced in a day?

As per now, nearly 400 million Parle-G are made every day. Additionally, around 1 million packets are sold weekly.
