On the occasion of International Peace Day lets find out the stand of India in the United Nations Security Council(UNSC) and India’s chances to be a permanent member of the council.

What is UNSC?

United Nations Security Council(UNSC) is one of the main organs of the United Nations(UN) and is responsible for maintaining world peace and security. Five permanent(USA, China, Russian Federation, France, and the United Kingdom) and ten temporary members elected for a duration of 2 years form the 15 member council.

India and UNSC(History)

India has a long history with UNSC being elected 8 times till date as a non-permanent member latest for the 2021-22 term also had a chance to become a permanent member of the council and would have become one, if our then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru had not declined the offer proposed by the United States in the year 1950 and pitched for China instead. This act of his with many more are considered blunders which proved as a setback to the nation.

“India because of many factors, is certainly entitled to a permanent seat in the security council. But we are not going in at the cost of China” -Jawaharlal Nehru

India’s bid to membership

India has been for long trying to secure a permanent seat in the council for the most valid reasons. According to Syed Akbaruddin, former permanent representative of India to UNSC, India fulfills all the criteria needed to obtain a permanent membership in the council. Not only India fulfills the criteria it also needs the position in these desperate times when China along the LAC and Pakistan along the LOC is posing as a threat to the security of the nation.

G4, a body consisting of India, Japan, Germany, and Brazil as members was formed in 2005 to support the members for their bid to the seat at UNSC. All these nations have a significant influence on the world and hence are arguably worthy of sharing veto powers in the UN Security Council.

India, the largest democracy of the world bid strengthen further among the G4 nations as it gets the minimum opposition which comes from the obvious, Pakistan, and China only while the other 4 permanent nations, the USA, France, Russian Federation, and the UK have shown full support.

“I look forward to a United Nations Security Council that includes India as a permanent member” -Barack Obama

The support of all 55 countries from the Asia-pacific region for India’s non-permanent member for the 2021-22 session also puts India in a strong position

India has been long trying to get the Council permanent seat with China posing as the only potential hurdle to success.

India as a permanent member

With the power of a permanent member, India will not only rise as a country but can pose as a new reformer in World’s peace. India shares it’s border with Pakistan on the western side while with China in the north and north-east. While the former is known as the terrorist hub of the world, later is famous for his hooliganism on other nations. India as a permanent member can not only force Pakistan to give up it’s nuclear programs but also force it to stop the terror funding. It will also escalate India’s stand against China to stop it’s Expansionist policies which disturb the peace among all border nations including India.

Summing up overall terrorism and unethical dominance in the Asian region would reduce greatly establishing peace and harmony in the continent where more then 60% of the world’s population resides. India with the power of Permanent member to the UNSC will establish new milestones in maintaining peace in the world.
