Homophobia is a sense of disgust and hatred against Homosexual people or people who are attracted to the same sex (gay and lesbians). People in India have been facing this problem long before we even realize, it has always been a very difficult task for Homosexual people to come out of the closet, which also befalls even to their families.

Whenever a person says I am Gay, people go “Whaaat..!!” and the situation gets all awkward and people try to ignore them, even parents start says lame stuff like ” हमारे यहाँ ऐसा नहीं होता ” or ” ये सब, कुछ नहीं होता ” like it’s some kind of superstition or myth. Phoney people like some “yoga gurus” claim that they can treat Homosexuality like it’s some kind of disease.

Homophobia often leads to an increase in the rate of suicide in Homosexual people. We Indians need to understand that Homosexuality is not some kind of a myth or superstition that came to India now, Homosexuality in India dates way back long before the 18th century and till then Homosexuals were not considered inferior like they are considered today.

The ancient Indian text Kamasutra written by Vatsyayana dedicates a complete chapter on erotic homosexual behavior. Historical literary evidence indicates that homosexuality has been prevalent across the Indian subcontinent throughout history and that homosexuals were not necessarily considered inferior in any way until about the 18th century during British colonial rule.

So now we can eliminate the sentence ” हमारे यहाँ ऐसा नहीं होता ” so stop giving reasons for the stuff you don’t understand. It’s about the sexual preferences of different people, it’s like a heterosexual guy likes salty food and a friend of his who is a homosexual like more sugary food, the heterosexual guy won’t and shouldn’t force a homosexual guy to eat salty food. It’s just a difference of preference it’s not like some kind of law that everyone has to follow. Even Rigveda (one of the 7 sacred texts in Hinduism) says “Vikriti Evam Prakriti” meaning what seems unnatural is also natural.

We are all equal and should never treat a person as inferior or be disgusted by their sexual preferences. It’s a matter of love, some people might love people of the same-sex and some might of different-sex or be sexually attracted to each other. It doesn’t matter, because at the end of the day we are all people and should be treated equally.

So next time when someone comes out to you, support them dammit.

Just understand a person comes out to you when they trust you with their whole heart. Just accept them, support them, they need you at that moment. Just accept them to show your support.

We all should support LGBTQ and should stand with them as they are also humans like us and have feelings.
