Indian Army had faced a very harsh time in the freezing temperature at LAC (Line of Actual Control), due to deficiency or late food & medical supply, the Jawaans had to suffer heavy losses.
To overcome this problem the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) took some major steps.
DECODE- The Major Obstacle of Nourishment
The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) worked on cultivating vegetables on the high altitude of Leh, for the Indian Army, with the help of technologies such as passive greenhouse technology, zero energy-based technique storage, and micro-greens.
The DRDO’s Defense Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR) has conducted the research regarding the same.
“The passive solar greenhouse (it is basically a solar collector, nevertheless it is collecting solar energy for heat and photosynthesis) has been authenticated by DIHAR as Leh has high intercity of solar even throughout peak winter.
This helps them to cultivate cabbage, cauliflower, and even tomato in the month of January where the temperature drops till –25 degrees.
DIHAR also established an underground greenhouse.
The problem of storing the summer vegetables is also solved by DIHAR, they developed zero energy-based storage, due to which vegetables like Potato, cabbage, cauliflower, Reddish, and carrot can be stored for 4-5 months.”
This statement was passed by the DR. OM PRAKASH CHAURASIA (DIHAR’S DIRECTOR).
DECODE- The Major Obstacle of Therapeutics
Dr Om Prakash Chaurasia told more about their discovery that “As the oxygen level is very low and under stress, in this area, DIHAR is also cultivating SUPER-FOOD (Food which you consume less and it is more effective) like Quinoa, Chia seed, seabuckthorn, and Gobi Berries, enriched with nutrition in Leh.”
Moreover, a special herb name SOLO, also known as SANJEEVANI, which is especially found in Ladakh was highlighted by our honourable Prime minister NARENDRA DAMODARDAS MODI in his August 2019 statement.
Describing the uses of SANJEEVANI, Dr Om Prakash Chaurasia said, “DRDO is working with UT administration for mass cultivation of it.
Furthermore, Himalaya is a treasure of herbs. Sanjeevani is one of the herbs found in the Himalayas. Its scientific name is RHODIOLA. It cures fatigue, mountain sickness, and works on memory boosting. The roots of Sanjeevani have the fragrance of a rose too.”
Fastest Cultivation in Harsh Conditions
DIHAR is working on the microgreen plant (seasoning) which will help jawans to grow plants in harsh conditions within 10-15 days.
The Indian army travels in harsh conditions where there is no substrate or soil to grow vegetables. With the help of this technique, Jawans will able to cultivate vegetables within Two-weeks by ensuring less usage of ingredients like coco-peat, and by doing so they will be able to take Micro-green Plants in their lunch or breakfast.
