Did Apple Really steal from Xerox?

Hey Amigos, We are back with another exciting topic – Did Apple steal from Xerox? Give it a look and let us know your reviews. Do tell if you want us to add something in this as your suggestions are our motivation.

So, let’s begin!!

Apple and Xerox are both renowned Companies and are at the top of their segments. Both are proven-epitome to the companies of their segments and are scrupulous in every way, we imagine. But at this point of time, a big question arises in front of us, which is, Did Apple steal from Xerox?

If the Answer to question: Did Apple steal from Xerox is Yes, then it will be one of the biggest heists in the chronicles of the Industry. We will below see, what was the actual truth, so keep your mind in the top gear and read the entire article to know what was the real blunder, or we say, truth in this case.

So, Let’s get started!

IBM was the Master player and held a Dominant position in Computer Segment in the World at that time. So, Apple had to have a tough toe to capture the market from the hands of IBM.

Xerox Alto vs Apple Lisa

Apple introduced Lisa, a $9,995 PC for Business Users in 1983, which was one of the most expensive PCs in its segment (Apple use UVP- Unique Value Preposition and Market Penetration strategy as its Marketing Strategy) at that time. However, at the time of its launch, it came to notice that many of its Innovations such as the Graphical User interface, a mouse, and document-centric computing, were taken from the Alto computer developed at Xerox PARC, introduced as the $16,595 Xerox Star in 1981, two-years back the line from Launch of Apple’s Lisa.

But it wasn’t the whole truth, so hold your breath and Curiosity and read, What was Steve Job’s say on this.

After Lisa’s Launch and Media allegations, Jobs recalled that he and Lisa’s team were very relieved when they saw the Xerox Star: ‘ We knew that they hadn’t done it right and that we could- at a fraction of the Price.” Walter Issacson in Steve Jobs: “The Apple raid on Xerox PARC is described as one of the biggest heists in the chronicles of Industry.” We quote Jobs on the subject: Picasso had quoted- “ Good artists copy, great Artists Steal.”- and We have always been shameless about stealing ideas … The Xerox Management were copier-heads who were unknown about what a computer could do…Xerox could have owned the entire computer industry at the same time it ruled over the Photocopying.

The Innovation was good, but in the annals of innovation, new ideas are only a little part of the whole equation,  what tests the most is Execution, same where Apple lacked at that time. Apple’s Lisa didn’t prove to be a commercial success.

Reason: Why Lisa Failed?

Although Lisa was the Most important development in Computers at that time, easily outpacing [IBM PCs], it didn’t prove as a commercial success. As mentioned above, IBM was the dominant player in the Computer Segment then. Also, intended business customers were reluctant to purchase Lisa because of its High Launch Price of $9,995, making it mostly incompetent with the less expensive IBM PCs.

What Did Steve Jobs did then?

Steve Jobs announced that Apple would release a superior system in Future, which would cover Lisa’s failure. So, as promised, he released Apple Macintosh in January 1984, which was faster and much less expensive, with the help of a world-class advertisement, which was later called, “The greatest commercial ever made” by Advertising Age.

Apple Macintosh- Source

Macintosh was called a great Success in 1984. Dealers initially welcoming IBM with open arms now fear an IBM dominated and controlled future. They were increasingly turning back to Apple as the only force that could ensure their future Freedom.
