“The pen isn’t mightier than the sword. Pens don’t win battles and swords don’t write destinies. Mighty is the hand that knows when to pick the pen and when to pick the sword”
Hey! The year 2020 has been challenging. We are living through the greatest shock to the international system since the second world war. The current situation began as a health event, comparable or more severe to a disaster. It expanded into an economic disruption, a Geo-political shock and a social challenge of a magnitude that none of us has experienced in our memories. Every facet of our national life is affected by the complexities and difficulties of the situation. Indian diplomacy and our external policies are no exception.

This year is very crucial for Indian diplomacy as well as global politics. After the origin of Coronavirus, China was the target point for all the affected economies. And it should be. Not because of the assumed theory that this a man-made blunder of China, but because of it’s handling of the emerging pandemic that was going to pause the entire world. As per the investigative report of CNN, presented by Journo Fareed Zakaria, Chinese Communist Party organised a community feast at Wuhan amid the pandemic. It acted as an epicentre of person to person infection. That’s why western media termed this COVID-19 as a Chinese Virus.
As per the CNN report, Chinese people are holding its government responsible for this pandemic. Suspicious death of the whistle-blower doctor has irked people and they grasped the second-largest protest of the Chinese liberation history against Xi’s administration. Nobody knows the actual reality because of press censorship.

Diplomatically, It is said that all these escalatory actions of China alongside MacMohan Line is to distract people’s attention from the pandemic management to the nationalist wave. And this way to manage a mess is appreciated and practiced by almost all the major leaders of the World. China in it’s escalatory actions, started disruptions in Leh and other parts of Indo-China boundary line. Firstly, They started building border roads, that led to a violent confrontation with the Indian Soldiers, resulting in martyrdom of our brave soldiers.

This was the stage where our own government concealed the actual situation of LAC from the Indian people. There was no uniformity and firmness in comments of the responsible ministers. This probably gave China an easy escape from the expected escalation on the border and they started negotiations. Negotiations that have not yielded anything yet. We lost an opportunity to push back China on diplomatic terms. We could have garnered support from the international community at that time against China’s illegal escalatory acts. But we just increased our “tolerant” silence.

The apathy of the situation is that most of the diplomatic decisions are taken in PMO, rather than in the Foreign Affair Ministry. In a world of complex threats, our security and leadership depend on all the elements of our power – including strong diplomacy. The government should understand that experts in the field should be given a loose hand in handling affairs because of their experience. We have not lost the ground yet.
